| Foreigners now moving to France cannot join the French health system as in order to do so they need to have been resident in France for at least 5 years, or have one of the European 'E' certificates. As a result, all new French residents not having an 'E' certificate need private medical care for the entirety of their medical costs and emergencies. Most ordinary complimentary medical insurance policies in France will only refund the relevant percentage element of the state costs that the French state will not cover, only an exceptionally few French medical insurance providers in fact covering the entirety of medical costs, and for less than a comparative foreign private healthcare insurance policy.
These state healthcare replacement French policies covering the entirety of medical costs also have two further advantages, one being that this basic insurance version of the policy which is designed to emulate the French standard state refund will in fact refund more that the state as a percentage of the cost outlay. The second advantage is that all versions of the policies can include alternative medicines such as homoepathy and acupuncture which are not covered by the state healthcare system.
However, a further advantage of these policies is for those with incomes in excess of some 40 000€ annually, depending on income and number of persons to be covered, as in additional to offering wider and better cover than can the state healh system, these policies are cheaper than paying the state's 8% charge on all assessable income.
